Short answer: yes, hand block print cotton is colourfast — after the first wash. A small amount of excess surface dye can rinse away the first time, which is normal for naturally finished, hand-printed cloth and isn’t the print failing.
Why it releases colour at first
We print with azo-free, water-based pigment dyes. On the first wash, loose surface colour rinses off and the rest settles into the fibre. After that, it’s stable.
How to set the colour
- First wash cold and separately, so any loose colour doesn’t transfer.
- Use a mild detergent — no bleach or harsh stain removers.
- Dry in shade, not direct sun, to protect the colours.
That’s the whole trick. There’s a fuller routine in how to wash & care for block print cotton.
Will it fade over time?
Cared for this way, the colours mellow beautifully rather than fading out — many people prefer how the cloth looks after a few seasons. Browse the prints in fabric by the yard.
