Block Print vs Screen Print: What’s the Difference?

At arm's length a hand block print and a screen print can look similar. Up close, and in the way they're made, they could hardly be more different. Here's how they compare — and how to tell which you're holding.

Hand block print: carved wood, pressed by hand

A pattern is carved into a wooden block, inked, and stamped onto the cloth by hand, one impression at a time — one block per colour. It is a heritage craft (see what is hand block printing), slow and artisanal, and it leaves gentle, human variation in every metre. Each piece is effectively one of a kind.

Screen print: ink through a stencil

Screen printing pushes ink through a fine mesh stencil — one screen per colour — often on a mechanised carousel. It is fast, highly repeatable and cheap at volume, which is why most high-street prints are screened. The trade-off is uniformity: every repeat is identical, with none of the hand-made character.

Side by side

  • Process: carved block, hand-pressed vs. mesh stencil, often machine.
  • Look: subtle variation and soft, slightly inked edges vs. flat, perfectly even repeats.
  • Penetration: hand block colour tends to sink into the weave, so the back shows the print; screen ink often sits on the surface.
  • Sustainability: block printing is low-energy — no screens to burn, no digital printers — though impact always depends on dyes and scale.
  • Cost & scale: screen wins on price per metre at volume; block wins on craft, story and small-batch character.

How to tell them apart

Look for tiny irregularities in placement and colour, a softly stamped edge, and colour visible on the reverse — those point to hand block print. Flawlessly uniform repeats with a crisp surface-only print usually mean screen.

Which is better?

Neither, objectively — it depends on what you value. If you want consistency at the lowest price, screen print delivers. If you want a genuinely handmade textile with provenance and gentle one-of-a-kind variation, that's hand block print. Everything we make is hand block printed in 100% cotton — browse it as fabric by the yard.

Look for gentle variation in colour and placement and a soft stamped edge — those signal hand block print. Perfectly uniform repeats usually mean screen print.
